When we first moved to Pittsburgh, one of the first things that Casey and I sought out was a dog park to take our two four-legged companions.
One weekend, we stumbled upon the dog park located within Riverview park via a google search. The reviews included numerous positive comments and we eagerly packed up our family of four and ventured to this unknown space.
What we found was not only a dog park that was beautifully nestled within a forest and serene area (with numerous trails nearby), but the Allegheny Observatory which was a pleasant and unexpected surprise.
I never imagined that so close to our home would be a major astronomical research institution. According to their website "Although pioneering in pure research is the chief function of the observatory, its telescopes and instrumental equipment are available for use by students of the university and observatory astronomers teach both credit and non-credit classes at the university. Throughout its long history the observatory has always been aware, too, of its obligation to allow the public to become acquainted with the wonders of the night sky by actual observations and illustrated lectures."
To our surprise, the Allegheny Observatory offers free tours on Thursday evenings (from April through August) and Friday evenings (from April through November 1). Reservation details can be found here on their website.
The staff is extremely knowledgable and the tour experience will leave memories that will linger for a lifetime (such as the opportunity to see the breathtaking rings of Saturn through a telescope).
If you are in the North Hills area, we highly recommend reserving a spot on a tour and partaking in the opportunity to learn more about this piece of history and base of knowledge.
