As I walked on the sidewalk towards the condo unit that I had purchased just a few days prior, my sister, mom, and brother in law accompanied me.
“It’s a little bit rough” I mention one more time, trying to properly set expectations as each step drew us closer to a building in which there was a unit that I now, well…. owned.
My thoughts fluttered over the list that had been increasingly growing both in my mind and phone (thank goodness for apple lists, yes?) which I quickly set aside as I smiled, trying to appear confident in my recent choices, as the distance to the front door increasingly became smaller.
“I definitely bought the worst house in a really good area” I concerningly yet somehow confidently said next.
“Do you think HGTV tells each show/cast that they need to incorporate that statement at least once per season?” my brother in law followed with.
Hmmm, this is a good point I thought. However, if this is Chip and Joanna’s theory….I can be confident in that notion, right?
Within a few seconds, my hand found the key, faded with an image of the American flag at the top. A lawyer had handed it to me only a few days prior at the closing. After a few quick jiggles, the door unlocked and swung open to reveal, well……this…..
Yes, there was a smell that may or may not have taken each and every person’s breath away as they entered. Yes, there were things…growing? from the floor. Yes, the ac/heater needed to be replaced. Yes, the hot water heater was on it’s last leg. Yes there were both pink and bright purple walls.
You may have read that and thought “no way,” “no thank you,” “I think this girl is possibly crazy,” or a few other thoughts.
If you are still reading, thank you. You may be curious to see just where this story may end up. Or, maybe….you resonate in some way.
The truth is, the thought of buying a “fixer upper” always made me curious. I had gotten close a few times but it never felt “right” if that makes any sense.
However, this home, from the minute I entered....I knew. From the fact that the area is bringing in a lot of jobs, to the fact that it’s very close to my sisters and family, to the fact that it's less than 15 minutes from one of my favorite beaches.....it all felt….right.
I’m excited to start this endeavor….to transform a really rough space into a home and to fill it with love and a promise of new beginning.
Maybe you are considering buying a fixer upper. Maybe you are considering making a life change. Maybe you are considering moving to a different state.
Wherever you are on your journey, I’d love if you would join me.
I’d love to offer any tips I learn along the way. I’d love for you to learn from my mistakes (I’m sure there will be PLENTY). I’d love to add some joy or laughter to your day (I’m sure there will be a lot of humorous situations to come).
I’d love for anyone who fears failure to find a space that makes that fear disappear because failure simply is a sign that you are making big decisions and learning as you go. I’d love for anyone who needs a space where they feel encouraged to find that here.....because no matter what happens in life, no matter how hard it gets, there is something good around the corner.
I hope this space echos these things and more and that you are reminded of beauty of the unknown, your abilities, and your gifts here.
A few disclosures/facts:
