If you are like me, you may find yourself daydreaming about exploring, road trips, and being "off the grid" only if for the day.
Something about being in nature floods my mind with happiness and reminds me of all of the reasons I dream of a sustainable and simpler lifestyle.
Empowering yourself by learning, exploring, and doing can be such a wonderful thing and setting aside time for new discovery can be so rewarding, something that lingers throughout the work week. Something that reminds you of happiness that comes from the process of discovering your passions and being inspired to continually learn and seek.
Today, I want to share with you a few of my favorite places sprinkled throughout Pittsburgh to discover by foot and find moments of awe.
1. McConnells Mill State Park
With over 9 miles of trails, there is something to continually discover here. We have hiked both the Hells Hollow (0.5-mile trail) and Slippery Rock Gorge (6.2 mile trail) and both had beautiful views and cannot be done justice through words. We have taken the dogs on the Hells Hollow trail and found that for us, this was a perfect adventure for the four of us. When hiking Slippery Rock Gorge, we parked at the Hells Hollow parking lot and hiked 6.2 miles to the end of the trail and back, for a total of 12.4 miles. Challenging ourselves to this hike enabled us to experience some truly breathtaking sights in nature.
2. Falls Run Park
This trail resides in Shaler Township and is quite honestly, always serene and peaceful with very little traffic on the trails. Sometimes I feel like this trail is a hidden secret and walking along the running water, hearing the sounds about, and taking in the sights is very rewarding. The trail leading to the waterfall is approximately a one mile walk.
3. Riverview Park
Riverview Park is another one of our favorite spots to explore no matter the season. There are several trails which are perfect for walking, running, biking, or hiking; even with dogs. This park and these trails are also located close to the Allegheny Observatory which is worth a separate post in itself. Such a unique gift to have in Pittsburgh!
